English as an Additional Language (EAL)
Carlton Comprehensive Public High School offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes for students in Grades 9–12 who are new to Canada and speak a language other than English as their first language.
The program helps students develop their English-language skills while building the confidence and knowledge needed to succeed at school and in their community.
EAL Classes and Support
Carlton offers two types of EAL classes to support students as they develop their English-language skills.
Elective Credit Classes
Students receive English-language instruction and earn elective credits. Students are placed in classes based on their English-language proficiency when they first arrive at Carlton.
Drop-In Homework Support
Students can access additional assistance with their schoolwork while continuing to develop their English-language skills.
Program Goals
EAL classes provide daily opportunities for students to practise English speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students also learn about Canadian culture to help them better understand their new surroundings.
Through language development and cultural learning, the program aims to strengthen students' social and academic communication skills, build confidence, and support their success in Canadian schools and community life.
